10 Alternative Treatments that Go Hand-in-Hand with Color Therapy

Updated on March 7, 2010

Color therapy is an interesting form of alternative healing. Through the use of color and light you may be able to balance out your body. This can cause you to have a better quality of life and may even cure certain specific ailments in the body. However, color therapy is not usually used as a treatment all by itself. Most people who use color therapy also use many other forms of natural medicine. Color therapy is simply one rung in the ladder to wellness.

Ten different alternative treatments that often go hand-in-hand with color therapy are:

1.     Massage therapy. This widely accepted form of healing is often used in conjunction with all other forms of natural medicine. Massage therapy provides both physical and emotional benefits for the body. It may be used to restore balance to the body, which supplements that balancing work that is done with color therapy. It can also be used as a method of calming down and focusing on what is going on with the body. This can be useful in increasing the benefits of color therapy.

2.     Reiki and other energy therapies. Reiki isn’t used quite as widely as massage therapy but it is still a very popular form of alternative medicine. Even more so than massage therapy, reiki is intended to create balance and harmony in the body. It is believed that reiki practitioners are able to divert the flow of energy within the body, sending the energy to the right spots on the body to promote healing. Color therapy is the perfect compliment to balancing out the body in this way.

3.     Chakra therapies. This form of alternative treatment is less common among the general public but is widely used by people who use color therapy. There are seven chakras within the body. The goal of chakra therapy is to align all seven chakras to create balance within the body. Each chakra is associated with a specific color. You can see how this balancing therapy in which color is important would be an obvious choice of alternative healing for people who are interested in color therapy.

4.     Herbal medicine. Most people who use color therapy are interested in non-surgical, non-drug solutions to their health problems. In some cases, the color therapy alone is simply not enough to solve the problems, though. Rather than taking traditionally prescribed medications, many of these people turn to herbal medicines as a cure for their problems. They continue to use color therapy to help balance the body and promote wellbeing but also rely heavily on their herbal medicines to treat their immediate conditions.

5.     Dietary changes. Alternative medicine often relies on diet to heal the body. It is believed that certain foods have healing properties whereas others have destructive properties. People who use color therapy may make a variety of different dietary changes in order to encourage their bodies into better health. These changes may be made on their own or under the guidance of an alternative medicine nutritionist.

6.     Gentle exercises. Exercises that incorporate gentle stretching and meditation are popular among people who use natural medicine. Yoga, qigong and other exercises similar to these are perfect for people who are interested in color therapy. One of the reasons for this is that these forms of exercise go hand in hand with meditation. People who are using color therapy often use meditation on certain colors as a part of this therapy.

7.     Meditation and visualization. Meditation alone can be a powerful tool that is used in conjunction with color therapy. More commonly, people use visualization to assist them with their color therapy. This may be done on your own or through guided meditation. Sometimes the focus is on the specific colors associated with therapy. In other cases, this is used just as a supplement to color therapy, allowing the mind to have the space necessary to be receptive to color therapy and other natural treatments.

8.     Acupuncture. It is not uncommon for people who are interested in color therapy to also have regular acupuncture or acupressure treatments as well. Acupuncture is another natural treatment that is intended to restore balance to the body. It can be used in conjunction with color therapy and chakra therapy to align all of the chakras in the body and to create health.

9.     Sound therapy, aromatherapy, and other sensory based therapies. Color therapy is a visual healing therapy. People who use this therapy typically believe in a holistic approach to healing. They know that focusing on only one of their senses is not going to be as beneficial as therapy for all of their senses. For that reason, color therapy practitioners often also use sound therapy, aromatherapy and touch therapies. These therapies are all combined together to promote the wellbeing of the body in a fully balanced manner.

10. Light therapy. Many people confuse color therapy with light therapy. This is due primarily to the fact that light is used in color therapy. Light therapy itself is, however, a different thing. Light therapy involves exposing the patient to different amounts of light. It is a highly effective cure for mood disorders including Seasonal Affective Disorder. People who are suffering from such disorders may find that a combination of color therapy and light therapy is a very effective treatment solution for them.

The thing to understand about color therapy is that it is typically used by people who are interested in doing all that they can to better their health. They combine different natural medicine options into a full treatment plan of which color therapy is an important part but only one part.
