List of the Top 10 Deadliest Jobs in the United States
87What do you think is the most dangerous job that you could do in the United States? If you’re particularly afraid of dying on the job then fishing is the industry that you really want to stay away from since it's at the top of the list of deadliest jobs. People in jobs related to fishing are 35 times more likely to die than the average non-fisherman according to recent statistics. Curious about what other jobs are most likely to be fatal?
Here is the top ten list for the deadliest jobs in theUnited States:
1. Fishing.
2. Logging.
3. Pilots / Flight Engineers.
4. Structural Iron and Steel Workers.
5. Farming / Ranching.
6. Garbage Collector / Recyclables Collector.
7. Roofing.
8. Installers and Repairmen Working on Electrical Power Lines.
9. Truck Drivers
10. Coal Mining.
Some of these jobs have obvious risks. After all, if you’respending all of your time working on roofs or working with electrical power lines then you are running into some risks in your daily job. However, other jobs on the list might not have made it to the forefront of your mind. After all, how often do you think about garbage collectors dying on the job? It turns out that it happens far more often than you might have thought.
It should be pointed out that even for these people, however, death on the job is unlikely. Less than .004 percent of people die each year due to injuries sustained on the job. It’s less than .001 percent oft he workers in the majority of jobs on this list.
However, it’s also notable that this list represents only those people who die on the job. There are many jobs that don’t result in a high number of fatalities but do result in a very large number of serious injuries. These jobs are dangerous to do even if they aren’t actually considered the deadliest jobs in the world.
And there’s another reason for workers in these fields to be concerned. The rates of death in some of these industries is on the rise. Statistics show that from 2007 to 2008 there was a six percent increase in the number of job-related deaths in the fishing and logging industries, the two deadliest jobs on the list. In contrast, some industries (such as coal mining and trucking) have increased regulations in recent years leading to a corresponding decrease in the number of job-related deaths.
The lesson to be learned here is that some jobs are more dangerous than others. People who are working in dangerous jobs such as those that use heavy machinery and other risky equipment are people who should be particularly careful on the job.
It’s also worth considering if the risk is worth the reward. A chart showing the pay rates of these deadly jobs reveals that fishermen and loggers earn less than a fourth of what pilots earn even though their jobs are considered to be deadlier. In fact, pilots tend to earn at least twice what anyone else on the list is earning. Pay-offs should be taken into consideration when pursuing risky careers!

Very interesting
Some of them were expected...and beings I lived on a farm for many years in farm country I knew of many, many tragic deaths. But some of the others you listed I was kind of surprised...like garbage collecters. Now that I think about it, it all makes sense. One thing I was expecting on the list was firefighters. I got a call the other day from out local firehouse where they explained it's the most dangerous job...and I am sure it is as they give their lives for others, but if they call again I will send them to this fantastic hub of yours, Kathryn...good job!
quite interesting
Very interesting list. When I had a courier business it was said to have been among the ten. Very well written article.
I am actually surprised to see pilots on the list. I didn't go deeper into your hub, but I guess this is mostly pilots of small planes? Statistically there really aren't that many commercial plane crashes and each one of those generally has two pilots or maybe three. Hmm. Intersting hub! Thanks.
Please take a look at my blogs , I encourage you to become a follower
I'm surprised not to see police officer on the list. I guess it depends on where you live.
Great hub Kathryn. Very informative. Along with garbage collecting I saw Truck driving as somewhat of a surprise. Thanks for the information.
Coal mining and fishing are very dangerous indeed, as well as the others you've mentioned. Great hub.
I didn't know farming & ranching was that dangerous. I guess I ranked in the top 10 deadliest jobs for a while lol, something new to brag about.
Very interesting facts..Thnks for sharing..
Thank you for sharing this!
I was a trucker for 10 years and drove in every conceivable weather condition imaginable and faced tornadoes in Kansas and Nebraska and witnessed many tragic accidents over this period of time. The rewarding part was getting to travel in every state in the USA and every province in Canada. Before this I was a nine to fiver working in various office jobs. I wouldn't have changed a thing getting my Class 1 license and doing what I did, it's another part of my life experiences, now I am semi retired and working in transportation logistics as a consultant. Great blog, I really enjoyed the read. You have my vote.
A friend of my husband's was a trash collector, and one day he was bitten by a rat. Next thing we knew he was in the hospital on life support with collapsed lungs. He survived, but barely.
I will try to avoid all these jobs! Cool hub!
Great hub. Thank you for the information.I am like a sponge. I like to learn.
nice hub, keep it uppp..
Uh oh I'm in the process of becoming a pilot now, hopefully the number 3 most dangerous is only relevant in the states! great article :)
An interesting list. I thought logging would be high. My father was a logger and saw many lives lost in the industry over the years.
The one that worries me the most is Pilot/Flight Engineer!
They go down and passengers go with them!
A loggers son, I was a rigger for 2 years and a motorcyclist my whole life, so I guess I have factored the risk pretty well, been lucky or both.
An interesting read to say the least. My father was a fisherman and would definitely concur about how dangerous of a career it can be. Especially with weather conditions being so inconsistent.
I loved it!
Thanks!
It sounds like fishermen and loggers should be asking for a raise. It seems like a lot of these jobs have tv shows on the discovery channel.
Very interesting hub. Since you have these years of Free Lance writing, I am sure I can learn something from you. Thanks for sharing this hub with us.
I didn't know roofing was THAT dangerous 0.0!!
I know some people who are avid sailors and I've heard some crazy stories of near-death experiences on the water. Nice hub.
Good thing I'm not a good fisherman LOL...but I think my job is on the list somewhere...
Plenty of reasons to be thankful that mine job isn't one of them!
I think some of the jobs on this list as being in the top 10 is complete baulderdash. I've even heard of electricians who were so skilled that they could put their feet in a bucket of water while working on an electrical wire. They did it on purpose, and was not harmed. But you gotta know your stuff. That's how I feel about all the jobs on this list. All ya gotta do is know your stuff - est.
Very informative information to remember when making a job choice. Maybe you will get the next tv show about jobs.
thanks for your informative hub, i didn't know about roofing. I learnt by your hub. if possible, keep more post like this informative hub
great hub! very interesting
