25 Ways for how to Get Links to your Blog

If you know anything about blogging, you know that you want to get other people on the Internet to link back to your blog. That's because this increases the traffic that comes to your blog. It does this through exposing your link to a greater number of people. It also does this through the fact that your blog will have more credibility with search engines if it has links to it from other sites. So you know that you're supposed to get other blogs to link to yours. But how do you do it?

Here are twenty five basic ways to get backlinks to your blog:

1. Write great content. People who like what you have to say on your blog will probably link to it eventually.

2. Ask other bloggers for link exchanges. This sometimes works although it's getting less common.

3. Comment on the blogs of others. This will encourage them to notice your blog and give links back to you.

4. Do reviews on your site. Review indie movies, folk musicians, local businesses or anything else that's interesting to you but small enough to get attention back from those folks. A favorable review will get linked to by the people you reviewed.

5. Submit your blog to social bookmarking sites such as Digg and Mixx.

6. Add your blog URL to your profiles on social networking sites such as MySpace and LinkedIn. This gets it some attention and can lead to backlinks from people on those sites.

7. Link to yourself. If you write for any other blogs or websites, include links back to your own blog whenever it's appropriate to do so. You can write articles and submit them to article submission sites to achieve the same purpose.

8. Offer an incentive. Post an announcement on your blog that you'll give some link love to anyone that links to your blog. Or run a giveaway contest for the site who links back to you the most times in a week.

9. Give some link love for free. Link love just means that you create a post that links to a bunch of other posts on the web. Many bloggers compile a "link love" list of 10-40 links on a once per week basis. These links out often lead to links in.

10. Use a service that gets you backlinks. You have to pay for these but you usually get what you pay for. Do your research to make sure that you're working with a legitimate company.

11. Use interviews on your site. Whenever you interview someone, you gain a reader (the person interviewed) who is likely to link back to that interview in order to promote themselves to others.

12. Regularly increase your own blogroll. When you link to others, they're more likely to link to you. Add new sites (related to yours by topic) to your blogroll on a regular basis.

13. Post on Craigslist or similar sites for guest bloggers. There are other bloggers out there who are happy to write for you especially if it means that they get to promote that writing and get a link back to their own blog. You benefit because they'll promote that post and link to it.

14. Write a press release. If you can write a great press release about some aspect of your work, submit it to press release sites and people will link to it.

15. Submit your blog to blog directories. If people can't find you, they can't link to you.

16. Put an RSS feed on your blog. People are more likely to come back to it again and again if they can subscribe to it. The more they come, they more likely they are to find something they want to link to.

17. Use BlogRush. This service distributes your post titles across multiple blogs.

18. Participate in forums related to your blog topic. Many let you include your URL link in your automatic signature.

19. Add a "link to me" button on your site. You don't see these often but they do exist. Sometimes people who wouldn't think about linking to you on their own will decide to go ahead and do it when they see the button.

20. Learn and use PayPerClick Advertising. You advertise yourself to people who would have a strong interest in your blog topic. The higher percentage of people who come to your site that actually have an interest in the topic, the higher percentage of links you're going to get out of it.

21. Respond to every comment that you get. People who write to you want to know that you're listening. When you do, you get loyal readers and they end up eventually linking to you because they like you.

22. Create a wiki or glossary for your topic. This is a resource that, if done well, everyone in the same industry will want to link to.

23. Become an Amazon reviewer. You don't get money but you can get links back to your blog. And you can review anything that you're already reading or listening to anyway so it's fairly easy.

24. Ask questions. Always ask a question in your posts so that people are encouraged to get involved in a conversation on your site. If the conversation gets heated, you're likely to get some attention to it in the form of links.

25. Create a "why you'd want to link to me" page for your blog. List a bunch of great reasons and you'll encourage people to go ahead and make that link.

Ultimately, getting backlinks boils down to a few basic things. You need to have something on your site that people will find worthy of linking to. And you need to be willing to get active in online networking so that you can get the attention of those people who have blogs that can link to yours. Within these basics, there are lots of little things that you can do to get backlinks. The more creative that you are, the better those links are likely to be.

Good job on assembling a list of useful tips on backlinking. Since it's recommended to comment on other people's sites/blogs, in part to offer insight and expand one's network of linked-back sites, I have to wonder if having so many links to a site really does catapult one's page ranking. You have any thoughts on how this can be measured?

Back linking is so foreign to me is there a way to barney it up as people say so I get it. Does it mean connecting with people online and getting them to click on my link to my blog?
