Deep Breathing for Weight Loss

By Kathryn Vercillo

There are rumors floating around out there that you can engage in deep breathing practices as a method of weight loss is. Are there any truth in these rumors? As with almost all rumors, deep breathing for weight loss is something which is possible to an extent but isn't exactly as the rumors would have you believe. You aren't going to go sit in a room, breathe deeply and come out five pounds lighter. You can, however, you use deep breathing as one part of a comprehensive life change to encourage weight loss.

Deep breathing is something that most of us should do but fail to do because we haven't learned how. It seems silly to think that we'd have to learn to breathe correctly, since it's such a natural part of life. However, most of us are not in touch with our bodies. We breathe without thinking about it. This breathing is often shallow. That's due to a combination of factors including our posture, our health, our metabolism and other characteristics of our body. Learning to deep breathe brings us more in touch with our bodies which is an important step towards long-lasting weight loss. Once we are more directly aware of our bodies, we are able to focus on the steps we need to take to make those bodies the shape and size we want them to be.

Deep breathing does have additional benefits other than simply putting us more in touch with our bodies. Deep breathing done on a regular basis can increase the metabolism which will help you to burn off more calories, more effectively utilize your food with your body and generally have more energy. Increased energy means an increased ability to exercise and further reduce weight. Increased metabolism is achieved through deep breathing because you're increasing your oxygen levels and therefore increasing the activity of the heart. To achieve an increased metabolism through deep breathing, however, you'll need to make this a natural part of your every day life. This means that deep breathing will be something that you'll have to learn to do and then practice regularly. Only if it is done on a steady basis can it result in increasing your metabolism.

Deep breathing may also assist with fat-burning. In addition to increasing your metabolism, deep breathing changes the way that oxygen is delivered throughout the body. This creates a change in the way that the body works and may result in improved fat burning. Additionally, when deep breathing is done to reduce stress, the fat-burning abilities of the body are increased because the stress factor goes down and the body can once again work properly.

So maybe you're not entirely sold on the rumor that deep breathing can improve weight loss. But it wouldn't hurt to try it, now would it? To do so, you'll want to find a quiet and comfortable place where you can really focus on your breathing. Breathe in and out slowly and deeply. The breath should come from your stomach, not just your lungs. See if it works for your weight loss!

I just found this and wanted to share that I have had success with an aerobic breathing plan called LifeLift. I've lost over 80 pounds and look and feel pretty fantastic. I varied my daily exercise programs with the choices Lifelift gives me; I changed a few bad habits like drinking diet soda and eating way too much white bread/pasta; and I followed Lifelift's exercise program. These program do work.

Thank you,

Marie

Deep breathing is to cleanse the lungs, provide more oxygen to be absorbed by the cells of the body.

Weight loss is one side effect only, although a good one.

Thanks for your nice article on health. Sitting on yog mudra and close one side nose with finger and inhale deeply but slowly from other and let the inhaled air remain inside for few seconds then close that nose with finger and exhale from other slowly. Keep doing it each early morning in open air when atmosphere is not polluted or less polluted but in the evening time advised not to do as that time the atmosphere is most polluted.

Thanks

I shout deep breathing to my clients - not for the weight loss but for the purpose of getting oxygen to the muscles. One client was amazed at how her lung capacity changed when climbing stairs.

I agree - not for weight loss.

Excellent hub - very well written and researched.

I read on another site that breathing for weight loss can result in a weakened diaphragm and other ailments later on.

Deep breathing also releases more toxins due to the fuller exhalations. People often overlook the lungs as a major way for toxins to leave our bodies in gaseous form. The body can wisely hold onto fats, especially around the belly, thighs and butt as a safe place to store toxins away from vital organs. So more toxins out means less need for fat! YEAH! One more reason to BREATHE DEEP! Thank you for the post. Very useful health advice.

Indeed, deep breathing can help us to lose weight. Most of us don't breathe properly and due to that capacity of our lungs are not used to full. This is hard for some people to breathe right but in following site, there are solution for you. Visit breathingdevice.co.uk

Deep breathing is great for STRESS reduction which eliminates stress related eating which helps you lose weight! Yoga, meditation, deep breathing, etc. should all be part of everyone's weight loss plan. Even if you aren't trying to lose weight you should do it just for your overall health. Deep breathing increases body CO2 (as in hatha yoga pranayama) and this increases oxygen delivery and makes our unconscious or basal breathing lighter later. The ideal breathing frequency at rest for maximum body and brain oxygen levels is 3-4 breaths per minute, but such people are very rare these days. The secret of yoga breathing was discovered by leading Russian physiologist Dr. Buteyko, PhD, MD:

Note that leading yoga teachers believe in goodness of automatic deep breathing (day and night) and that CO2 is a poison. Medical science and ancient yoga science teach us the opposite ideas: We should breathe less for better health:
