Grant Money to Start your own Business

Updated on May 30, 2010

You want to start your own business for any number of reasons. Maybe there's a particular job that has always been your dream job and you want to see if you can make it happen. Or perhaps you just want the flexibility that working from home or owning your own business can offer to you. But you don't have the start-up capital to start your own business. Maybe you can get a loan or maybe you can't. But what if you could get grant money to start your own business? Many people don't realize how much money is out there just waiting to be put into their hands for small business start-up costs.

Despite the fact that this grant money is definitely out there, it's not easy to access it. This is because there is a lot of competition for the money. When you go to file for your business license, you'll see that there is a long line ahead of you filing business start-up papers on the same day. This adds up to a large number of small businesses starting up each year and not all of you are going to qualify for grant money. You'll need to make yourself stand out against this competition if you're going to get the grant money that you're seeking.

In addition to the competition, there are a large number of people who are aware of how much you'll want to get grant money to start your own business. Some of these people generally want to help by providing you with information that improves your chances of getting a loan. But there are also plenty of people out there who will try to scam you. Be wary of people and places that are trying to sell you materials to get grant money to start your own business. You may want to get a basic business plan writing book and information about developing a marketing plan but you don't need to invest a lot of money in learning how to get grants. After all, the point of the grant money is that you don't have that money to spend!

So, how do you get that grant money if you can't trust the people advertising that they can help you? Go to the credible sources and put in your own hard work. Part of the key to getting grant money is being able to prove that you are willing to put in the work that will be necessary to grow your business. You do this by developing a business plan and a marketing plan which are thought-filled and research-based. This will be crucial in grant applications, showing foundations and companies that you know what you're doing. It will also be a great guide for you to use in developing your business once you get the grant money that you want! Developing your business and marketing plan is the first thing that you'll need to do for getting grants.

The next thing that you'll need to do is find the grants that make sense for your business. Go to legitimate government and corporation sites, not to general online sites to get the most accurate information. Figure out what the specialties are of your company that will help you get certain grants. For example, if you are a woman-owned or minority-owned business, there are certain grants that apply specifically to your needs. Request the grant application information for all of the grants that you may qualify for. Read through it carefully when you get it and make sure that you meet all of the qualifications. Then create a spreadsheet or file folder showing when each of the grant applications is due so that you can file them in a timely manner. Complete all of the requested information and file before deadlines to make sure that you have a good chance of qualifying for the grant money. Then wait to hear that you've received it!
