How Horoscopes and Birth Order May Affect your Dating Personality

Updated on October 1, 2010

How do you decide who you are going to date? How do you decide if things are going well with someone that you’ve just started dating? Hopefully you listen to your gut instinct and the advice of the loved ones that you really trust. But there’s a good chance that you also look at other factors as well – factors that may seem to be written into the stars.

For example, you may consider your horoscope when it comes to dating. You may use this information to decide who you’ll date, predict when a good time is for dating or get a better sense of long-term compatibility with someone that you’re starting to like.

Another thing you may consider is birth order Perhaps you only date people who have the same place in the family lineup as you do. Or conversely, perhaps you only date people who complement you with a different spot in the birth order of their families.

Does it make sense to use these tools when dating?

Reading Into Your Horoscope

Many people rely on information from their horoscopes to help dictate their dating lives. If you’ve ever read a horoscope that suggested love was going to go well for you this month and got a little flutter in your heart filled with hope then you can relate a little bit to one of those people. Or perhaps you’re more serious about horoscopes and actually visit psychics and read your tarot cards and all of that.

I think that relying on your horoscope to determine when a good time to date is doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for most people. There are so many things going on in life most of the time that it just doesn’t make sense to use a horoscope calendar to dictate good and bad dating times.

However, a horoscope can be helpful to you when it comes to dating. It can give you some insight into the general personality of someone that you’re considering dating, although this is much more likely to be accurate if you have detailed horoscope information and not just the person’s main sign. Remember, however, that many factors influence personality and their horoscope sign is just one of those possible factors.

I would say that a horoscope can be a nice tool to use for getting a read on your own feelings about a person. For example, if you read that the person’s sign indicates that they are stubborn and you find yourself nodding in agreement then that’s a clue that this is a personality trait in them that stands out to you and you need to think about that. I don’t, however, believe that a horoscope should be used by itself as a method of determining who or when to date.

What do you think?

Dating and Birth Order

In contrast, I believe that birth order can be a great predictor of how well things are going to work out in a relationship between two people. Birth order plays a really important role in the formation of the personality. You certainly have to realize that all families are different and that people can be very different from what you would predict based on their birth order. Nevertheless, those people tend to be the exceptions to the rule and there are general rules about birth order that I believe you can rely on when guessing what someone may be like.

Many different factors affect your personality but I do think that birth order is a major determinant. I believe that oldest children have a general tendency to act a certain way. They’re responsible, driven, care-taking, independent, etc. They play the role of leader to their younger siblings and tend to have more responsibilities at a younger age because of that. Youngest children also share some basic traits; impulsivity, persistence and a love for affection due in large part to the fact that they’ve received a lot of help and attention from their older siblings over the years. It doesn’t hold true in all instances, but birth order is a good indicator of someone’s very general personality traits.

Over time, I believe that you can figure out which birth order types you tend to get along with best. For example, as an oldest child, I tend to have a lot in common with other eldests. We “get” each other. I do sometimes have more fun with youngest children and middle children because they tend to have an adventurous and humorous side that has developed over the years. However, I tend to get too involved in care-taking of people who are younger children in their family so relationships with eldests work best for me.

This isn’t to say that the oldest in the family should always date oldests. I think it’s something that you have to figure out for yourself. And even then, I do think that you should branch out and take chances on people who aren’t necessarily the birth order you generally tend to get along with.

Do you date people who are the same or a different birth order from what you are?

Horoscopes, Birth Order and Other Tools for Dating

I think that there are tons of tools like this that you can use to get a good sense of who you might want to date and how you’re feeling about a relationship. However, I think that they’re only guides to help you get a read on your own true feelings about the situation. I don’t think that they should determine your feelings or that you should read too much into them without checking in with yourself about what you feel.
