How To Get The Most Out Of Daytime Drinking
The majority of us don’t spend all day drinking on a regular basis. (If you do then you may have a problem that you want to get some help for!) But occasionally there may be a personal or social reason to spend the day drinking. A common reason is a specific holiday. For example, some people start doing their drinking early while preparing Thanksgiving dinner and then continue it through dessert. Other people do early and all day drinking on the day of a big game like the Super Bowl. Attending an all-day or weekend-long event such as an outdoor music festival is another reason you may want to spend the whole day drinking. Common San Francisco events that result in people drinking all day include Pride weekend and Bay to Breakers.
Even if you think that you have a good reason, you definitely want to be careful about drinking all day. Most of us can’t drink all day and still be on our feet by the end of the night. However, these step-by-step tricks from the mouths of lushes should keep you on your toes. You’ll be able to do your drinking without falling down drunk by noon and without making yourself entirely sick.
Step One: Pack those pockets and purses. Drinking all day can be a doozy so make sure you’re prepared for the worst, just in case. Sunglasses are a must because that sunlight is going to hit you whenever you step out of the bar. Make-up for bleary-eyed touch-up, Advil for the inevitable headache, and shoes that don’t kill your feet are all optional but definitely recommended. Take a debit card or cash and leave the credit at home so that you don’t entirely overdo it while you’re out.
Step Two: Noon! That’s officially the start of daytime drinking so meet up with your friends at the corner bar and toast to that. You should stick with beer from start to end, but if you’re planning on doing the liquor thing, early is the time to do it. Pace yourself. Drink slowly. And try not to start before that noontime marker.
Step Three: Leaving the first bar. Head somewhere that lets you have an activity and not just continue the drinking. If you’re just sitting around with cocktails and gossip, you’re going to drink yourself into sickness before the day is done. Find a video game bar or a place to pool and nurse those drinks. The goal here is to maintain a buzz without going overboard. You may even (gasp) take a break at this point.
Step Four: The lunch spot. It’s about 2 or 3 by now and you’ve got a nice buzz going. Even it out with some food especially some carbs. Find a place that’s got cheap eats where the beer flows readily. You don’t want to lose the buzz but you don’t want it to spill over into drunkenness either.
Step Five: Take the plunge. Once the food’s in your system, you’re ready to go all out. Now is the time for the drinking games and the dares. Actually, you are probably better off keeping a good pace and by now you should have switched to beer if you had previously been drinking hard liquor. That said, if you’re planning on doing heavy drinking today then now is the time rather than waiting until any later.
Step Five: Coast. After the plunge, when it’s getting closer to 5 or 6 in the evening, your drunk self should be in that nice silly spot where you’re not quite going to forget what you say but you don’t at all care that you’re saying it. You’ve successfully drunk your day away. Slow down. Drink some water.
Step Six: Go home, change into dance club clothes and get ready to continue the night. Exercising with dance while nursing a drink is a good way to wind down this type of day. Plan to sleep in tomorrow and don’t do this again for awhile!
