How to Make a Candle out of Crayons

There are many different ways that you can make a candle. You can use candlemaking kits purchased at a craft store. You can use gel and wicks to create gel-based candles. You can melt wax and shape it to make basic candles. But this set of instructions is for something that's a little bit more simple ... and maybe a little bit more fun. At the end of these instructions, you'll know how to make a candle out of crayons.
Here's what you need to do to make this kind of candle:
o Collect the crayons. One of the best things about this project is that it makes use of something that you're probably not going to use anymore - old crayons. Once crayons get down to a stubby size and kids don't want to use them anymore, have them toss those crayons into a crayon container. When it fills up, you're ready to make some crayon candles.
o Separate the crayons by color. If you melt all of the crayons together, you're going to have one brown candle. Instead, separate them by color so you can better design the candles with colors of your choosing.
o Gather together the other materials that you'll need. This is really easy because the only things that you need besides crayons are just plastic wax-melting bags, candle molds and wicks. These can all be purchased inexpensively at a craft store.
o Melt the crayons. You can buy plastic bags at the craft store that are designed specifically for melting wax. Using these bags and the directions that come along with this is the best way to melt the crayons. You can put different colored crayons in different bags to make different colors of candles.
o Pour the melted crayon wax into the candle molds. You can pour one color in each mold to have several candles that are each a different color. Alternatively, you can pour different colors together into the same mold to create colored patterns inside of one candle. Experiment with the different options to find candle designs that you can really be proud of.
o Insert a wick into the molded candle. This is what you'll use to burn the crayon candle once it has hardened and is ready for use.
o Wait. You'll have to wait for the wax to become hard in the mold before you can remove it and use the candle. If you remove the crayon wax from the mold too early, it will lose its shape and the candle will fall apart. It should be completely cool to the touch. If you scratch at it in the mold, it should leave a scratch mark.
o Remove the candle from the mold. Now you can either burn the candle or wrap it up to give as a gift to someone else!
Making candles from crayons is a terrific project for families. It teaches kids about recycling because it puts those old broken crayon pieces to a new use. It also lets the kids create something new from a tool they use all of the time. And it gives the family new candles at a low cost.

Nice hub! Loved making candles as a kid... we used to collect seashells and put them in, pressed up against the sides. I think we used milk cartons as molds, and ripped away the sides. An easy way to avoid the mold problem is to make jar candles.

What a fantastic idea. I actually wasn't planning on making candles (I was looking for soap making info when I stumble on your hub), but this idea is just too good to pass by. I'm going to go through my kid's crayon box for old, broken crayons and give this a try.
Also, as you said, what a great way to demonstrate reusing instead of casting off old items in your home.
I love make stuff so i just might have to do this. My 3 kids love do color so i think i will do this for them!!!
What a great idea! One question though, how well do they burn? Is it messy? Can I pour the wax in a votive holder to harden, or does the wax get too hot to burn in a glass container? I have never made candles before but have done alot of research.

I tried this with my kids. We ended up with a beautiful candle that would not burn at all! I am going to try again with a combination of candle wax and crayons. In the meantime, I would love to hear if anyone was sucessful with this idea.

Great Hub - I am in love with the picture of the Carved Crayons - that is very cool.
I've found that some of the crayons don't mix well or after melting the blended colors come out not as expected. It takes some experience even with a simple task like this one.
Still if you lack some candle making supplies this is a cool idea to substitute. Try it and see what comes out.

Hey I made a candle out of crayons in gifted yesterday. They are so fun to make. My gifted teacher is the best art teacher is the school. I wish to make a bunch of candle later. le$lie

Making candles with crayons is extremely hazardous. The colorants/wax used will actually clog your wicks and will throw incredible amounts of soot.
It is best to use standard wax supplies for making candles.
i did
i am a teacher at krr elementry ans last week my kids made a candle out of crayons,ice cubes.milk cartons and a pan burnner. all you haave to do isput the ice cubes in the milk carton ans milt the crayons in the pan burnner then when melted then por over the ice cubes the hot crayons may melt the ice when the crayons turn into a solid then flip the milk carton over and dran out the water. when your done you have a great wonderful candle.

Wouldn't the be called crandles ...
I have done this with old crayons before; but for the mould.. i used sand! Dug a hole in the beach ( or a bucket works too) and pour in the wax and wait for it to harden! Makes a very unique souvenir !! :)
We would like to try to make candles from crayons, but where can I buy the plasic bags to melt the candles? We went to AC Moore and Michael's and they did not carr them

This page is the best one i have found about how to male candles. And with something that is most likely at home already. There is something though that might attract more people OK. A lot of people like scented candeles so you could say this is optoinall but say that they can put a couple of teaspoons of vanilla in it. You dont have to though this is just a suggestion .
